Wellness Centers – Fort Peck Community College

Wellness Centers

Based upon the philosophy that health, physical fitness, and spirituality is important in American Indian heritage, the mission of the Daya Tibi Health and Wellness Centers is to provide an environment conducive to the promotion of the total health and well being of the members of the Fort Peck Tribes and citizens of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.

The Fort Peck Community College Wellness Center opened up in 1996 at 503-2nd Avenue West in Poplar. It was the site of the old roller rink and the bowling alley. The Center was the vision of former Fort Peck Community College President James Shanley, who wanted to improve the quality of life around the reservation. Dr. Shanley felt that a site emphasizing physical fitness and rehabilitation for those with heart problems and other ailments, such as diabetes, would benefit the reservation community and provide a center where people of could meet to exercise and to learn.

In 1999 the Fort Peck Community College expanded its wellness outreach to Wolf Point. The Fort Peck Community College Wellness Center in Wolf Point is located at 515 6th Ave South.

What started out as a vision has grown from a single center with limited equipment, to two fully equipped centers with modern up-to-date equipment that average over one hundred visits a day.

The Fort Peck Wellness Center was originally funded by The Kellogg Grant, Rural Health and Family Life Center. In recent years the centers have been funded by USDA, Fort Peck Tribes Diabetic Program, the CDC, and the Fort Peck Community College General Fund.

Thanks to the following people who, without their dedication to the Wellness Centers, we would not be here today: former Fort Peck Community College President James Shanley, the Fort Peck Community College Board of Directors, former Community Services Director Larry Wetsit, former Ag Extension Director Carrie Schumacher, Fort Peck Diabetes Program Director Verbena Savior and Community Volunteers.
